The fickle storm is forecast to expire yet again after it crosses the islands and heads into the eastern Caribbean. "Strong westerly shear is likely to continue to adversely affect Kirk while it moves over the Caribbean, and the system should weaken into a depression within 72 hours or sooner, and become a remnant low later in the forecast period". A gust of 170kph was recorded at Wilmington airport, surpassing the power of Hurricane Fran two decades ago. A mother and infant were killed when a tree fell on their home Friday in Wilmington, North Carolina . She plans to continue to ride out the storm. The Carteret Country Sheriff's Department confirmed that these two deaths initially reported as a result of Florence were a result of an apparent murder-suicide. (more...)

The National Hurricane Center's projected track had Florence hovering off the southern North Carolina coast from Thursday night (Friday NZT) until landfall Saturday morning (Sunday NZT) or so, about a day later than previously expected. Many major roads and arteries have reversed traffic flow to help residents evacuate quickly. A Hurricane Center forecast map showed the storm making landfall on Tuesday evening near the Alabama-Mississippi border.
