NASA went with its old, straightforward approach this time, using a parachute and braking engines to get InSight's speed from 12,300 mph when it pierced the Martian atmosphere, about 77 miles up, to 5 mph at touchdown. The satellite also shot back a quick photo from Mars' surface. The MarCO spacecraft hitched a ride with InSight. To successfully land, Insight must go from about about 12,300 miles per hour to 0 in around six minutes. A gust of 170kph was recorded at Wilmington airport, surpassing the power of Hurricane Fran two decades ago. A mother and infant were killed when a tree fell on their home Friday in Wilmington, North Carolina . She plans to continue to ride out the storm. The Carteret Country Sheriff's Department confirmed that these two deaths initially reported as a result of Florence were a result of an apparent murder-suicide. (more...)
