Deadly 5.9 magnitude quake hits northwestern Iran

The U.S. Geological Survey reporting the area was hit with a magnitude 3.5 natural disaster just after 4:30 a.m.

At least five people have been killed and 120 others injured after a 5.8-magnitude natural disaster struck northwestern Iran, Iranian state-owned Press TV reported.

The quake struck the 120 kilometres (75 miles) southeast of the city of Tabriz, in East Azerbaijan Province in the early hours of the day. Sign-up now and enjoy one (1) week free access!

Pirhossein Koulivand told state TV about the deaths and injuries early Friday morning. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the quake was felt by some 20 million people.

Press TV said emergency and evaluation teams are operating and Red Crescent teams have been dispatched to the area.

Iran sits where two major tectonic plates meet and sees frequent seismic activity.

Quakes below 4.0 magnitude are sometimes felt but rarely cause much damage, according to the USGS.

Reports said at least 400 houses had been damaged.

According to the USGS, there was one report of people feeling the temblor in the Bradley area.

More recently, in 2017, a magnitude 7 quake hit the Iran-Iraq border region, killing 600 people and injuring more than 9,000.

On November 12, 2017, the western province of Kermanshah was hit by a major 7.3-magnitude quake that killed 620 people.
