Whitney Houston's Gay Lover Tells All in New Book

Robyn Crawford in 2003

Robyn Crawford, one of the late Whitney Houston's best friends, revealed in her new memoir, "A Song For You: My Life with Whitney Houston" that the two shared a romantic relationship for years.

The pair reportedly met in New Jersey back in 1980 when Robyn was 19 and Whitney was 17.

In step with Robyn, the I Will Consistently Adore You singer ended the bodily side of their relationship in 1982 rapidly after signing a recording deal with Clive Davis on Arista.

Houston stated that they couldn't be physical anymore with each other because it would make their lives more hard, and in the 1980s, Crawford felt the same way. That said, Crawford explained that neither she nor Whitney used a label to define their sexualities. While Houston's brother Gary admitted he was not fond of Crawford, calling her a "nobody," others in Houston's circle felt that Crawford was a safe place for the star and allowed the singer to be her true self.

"We talked and talked", Crawford writes.

"She said, 'I don't believe we should be physical anymore, '" Crawford recalled to Today.

Eddie Murphy reportedly tried to stop Whitney Houston from marrying Bobby Brown on her wedding day. And as she became more and more famous, Whitney made a decision to put a stop to their relationship altogether.

For those questioning why Crawford is finally speaking up after keeping this secret for nearly four decades, she explains it comes from a desire to let the world see a more complete view of the woman she knew and loved for most of her life. "We were on a journey together and we were connected". Which is why Crawford wrote the book.

Whitney's health and wellbeing would be on a slippery slope from then on and Crawford said that it was hard watching her friend becoming isolated.

The two remained close and Crawford spent years working for Houston, who married singer Bobby Brown in 1992. Houston's mother admitted to Oprah during an interview that she did not like Crawford. "She's entitled. If she wants to write a book, who knows what the book is about?"

As for people who may doubt her story, she replied, "I can't even get into that".

"I saw and heard him speak to her in ways that were demeaning, and [he] talked down to her", says Crawford.

"At the apartment, we took off our clothes, and for the first time, we touched each other", Crawford writes.

"I never envisioned speaking publicly about my life". A Tune For You hits cabinets on November 12.

Crawford says by writing her book, she hopes to set the record straight about the legendary singer.
