Gautam and Kazi arrested in KPL spot-fixing case

CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi have been arrested on charges of fixing

Gautam, a former Karnataka wicketkeeper-batsman, was earlier on Thursday arrested by the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch along with Abrar Kazi for allegedly accepting money to spot-fix in the scandal-ridden Karnataka Premier League (KPL).

In the final match, Ballari Tuskers, chasing a target of 152 runs, lost to Hubli Tigers by eight runs. Viswanathan made 9 off 17 balls in that innings.

It may be recalled that the CCB sleuths had earlier arrested, Ali Ashfaq Thara, owner of Belagavi team, Vinu Prasad, a bowling coach of a KPL team and another batsman Vishwanathan.

The KSCA said that any other franchise, players, match officials and support staff who are arrested with a prima facie evidence of their involvement in any illegal activity will be suspended immediately and if found guilty, appropriate and stringent action will be taken forthwith. Bellary team captain CM Gautum and Abrar Kazi arrested.

Gautam is a popular name in Karnataka cricket circles and was instrumental in helping the Karnataka Ranji cricket team win back-to-back domestic trebles in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

The 33-year-old Gautam is a seasoned campaigner having turned up for Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.

They also fixed another match in the league. In this match, they were offered Rs 20 lakh for slow batting. "Further investigation on and more arrests would be done", the release added.

They said spot-fixing follows signs and codes and only players and bookies who use them in their communication know about them.

Each Gautham and Kazi had been named of their respective state squads for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match, scheduled to start on Friday. Also, Kazi moved across to Nagaland a year ago and was a success as he scored three scores of more than150 scores as a middle-order batsman. Shekhawat has been accused of introducing the players and other members of the team to the bookie. He transferred to Mizoram at the start of this season.

The coach allegedly manipulated a game between Bengaluru Blasters and Belagavi Panthers past year.
