Stephen Strasburg Opts Out Of Nationals Contract

REPORT: Stephen Strasburg Plans To Opt-Out and Is Seeking *At Least* $175 Million in Free Agency

Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg has opted out of his contract and will hit free agency, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Strasburg is forgoing four years and $100 million in guaranteed money left on his original seven-year, $175-million deal. The following night, Washington won Game 7 and Strasburg became the first No. 1 overall draft pick to be named World Series MVP. Doolittle's move comes after Trump was booed while attending Game 5 of the World Series in Washington, D.C., on October 27.

Just a few days later, however, the roster has already begun to change.

Pitcher Sean Doolittle told The Washington Post he would not attend Monday's ceremony, saying he strongly disagreed with Mr. Trump's "divisive rhetoric".

And then Adam Eaton - who had joined the team for a lineup reading when the Nats visited during the break between the NLCS and World Series - came in and drank a beer through his shirt like Capitals winger T.J. Oshie became famous for doing. But he'll at least test the free-agent market, which will be highlighted pitching-wise by him and Gerrit Cole. Both players are expected to sign contracts north of $200 million. He led the NL in wins (18) and innings (209), while his 251 strikeouts ranked second and were tops on his team.

Strasburg, two years older than Cole, likely would command a lower price because of age and durability.

All-Star third baseman Anthony Rendon, another key component of the Nationals' title, also is a free agent represented by Boras.
