Brutal Djokovic sinks Greek young gun Tsitsipas at Paris Masters

Djokovic found his flow in the second set

Canadian 20-year-old Denis Shapovalov cruised into the fourth Masters semi-final of his young career by ending Gael Monfils' bid to reach the ATP Finals with a totally one-sided 6-2, 6-2 win.

The Spaniard would finish the year as No. 1 if he wins the Paris Masters for the first time.

Nadal took the first set thanks to a single break of serve in game three, saving break points in the second and eighth games himself before serving it out in style.

But Nadal stepped it up in the tie-break, with two incredible winners on the run helping him take a crucial one-set lead. "I am aware I have to play at my best level and hopefully the serve will keep being like now", said the Manacor native.

The 20-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., now ranked 28th in the world, posted his third straight win over a top-15 opponent. "I am playing knowing that it's a hard tournament, you need to be focused to hold your serve and take advantage of the few chances you have on return".

"I lost to Stefanos in Shanghai and obviously I went through the videos, understanding what I did well, what I didn't do so well", Djokovic said.

"I was feeling energy-wise better and felt more alert, just more strength, more energy, more speed", said the 32-year-old, who has been struggling with illness this week.

Nadal has never won the Paris Masters or the ATP Finals and only two of his 84 titles have come indoors.

Should he fail, Italian Matteo Berrettini, who was eliminated in the second round here, will earn the spot for the November 10-17 event at the O2 in London.

He has beaten Nadal once, in the 2017 Canadian Open, but lost their other meeting in Rome a year ago, while he also has a 1-1 head-to-head record with Tsonga.

"He's been playing some terrific tennis this week... I don't play too bad myself, so it's going to be for sure a good one".

The Bulgarian became the lowest-ranked player to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since 2008 at Flushing Meadows, before losing to Daniil Medvedev.

The 13th seed Monfils managed to salvage some pride with a couple of late holds, but Shapovalov wrapped up the win with his fifth ace on his first match point.

World number 42 Garin, playing in his first Masters quarter-final, served for the second set at 5-4, but the 28-year-old Dimitrov reeled off three straight games to claim an impressive victory.

Shortly after the match ATP announced that Shapovalov was withdrawing from the Next Gen Finals - a year-ending tournament featuring eight players aged 21 and under that starts Tuesday - due to fatigue and would be replaced by Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
