Exynos 990 flagship-grade chip from Samsung goes official

Exynos 990 featured

Thanks to a dedicated driver, Exynos 990 also supports display panels with up to 120Hz refresh rate. There is, of course, a new Exynos 5G Modem 5123, which the company boasts is the first of its kind to be manufactured using a 7nm process.

The chip that will power those phones, 5G or otherwise, will be the new Exynos 990 (yes, they have started dropping a digit). This makes the Exynos 990 more similar to the Exynos 9825, which also uses the 7nm node and can be now found on the likes of the Galaxy Note 10. Furthermore, the Exynos 990 features a dual-core neural processing unit (NPU) and improved digital signal processor (DSP) that can perform over ten-trillion operations (TOPs) per second, according to Samsung's own testing.

Samsung also proposed new business possibilities for next-generation memory technologies, including the company's 7th-generation V-NAND with almost 200 (1yy) cell layers for mobile and other premium memory solutions and next-generation PCIe Gen5 SSDs for future server and storage applications.

Samsung Exynos 990 is built on a 7nm extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography process and consists of two custom Exynos M5 cores, two ARM Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores.

We'll certainly be keeping an eye out for the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 next year. The company says that the upgrade can delivers up to 20% performance enhancement over the Exynos 9820 which had the Exynos M4 microarchitecture.

For videos, the Exynos 990 supports encoding and decoding 8K videos at 30fps or 4K UHD videos at 120fps. It also has resolution support for up to 108MP.

Apart from the SoC, Samsung also unveiled Exynos 5123 5G modem which will be used in its 5G phones starting next year.

The new product sees Samsung quickly ramping up its product portfolio, after the Exynos 980 with integrated 5G modem was announced only in September. It supports network spectrums ranging from sub-6GHz 5G all the way to 2G. And for Samsung users all over the world, there's a new Exynos CPU just around the corner. Its capabilities are supposed to be impressive: max 5.1 Gbps downlink in sub-6GHz 5G mode, max 7.35 Gbps in mmWave 5G mode, and up to 3.0 Gbps in 4G LTE.

Samsung expects the Exynos 990 and Exynos 5123 to begin mass production by the end of 2019.
