Alongside the flying auto concept, known as a fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle, the two firms will create a team to explore urban air travel, including the market potential for premium vehicles and possible use cases.

It what may seem like a shocking move, Porsche announced on Thursday (October 10) it is working on a fully electric flying auto.

Porsche and Boeing are now working on a concept for a flying taxi.

Porsche says it made a decision to venture into this emerging industry after internal studies have shown the urban air mobility market will gain momentum after the middle of the next decade. Even in cities with 100 percent electric vehicle traffic, the gridlock from increased rides could potentially result in an overall increase in energy consumption.

"Porsche is looking to enhance its scope as a sports auto manufacturer by becoming a leading brand for premium mobility", von Platen said.

Boeing, Porsche and Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences are also developing a concept for a fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle.

Steve Nordlund, vice president and general manager of Boeing NeXt, said the collaboration is building on the company's efforts "to develop a safe and efficient new mobility ecosystem". According to the automaker's sales and marketing chief, Detlev von Platen, the long-term future for the brand is being a premium mobility provider, and this could extend to air travel.

The partnership will lead to Porsche and Boeing completing an analysis of the market for a personal flying vehicle. The study also suggested that urban air mobility vehicles will transport passengers, quicker and more efficiently that traditional modes of transportation at a lower cost as well. He added, "Porsche and Boeing together bring precision engineering, style and innovation to accelerate urban air mobility worldwide".
