NBA's Chinese business interests clash with free speech

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver speaks at a news conference before an NBA preseason basketball game between the Houston Rockets and the Toronto Raptors Tuesday Oct. 8 2019 in Saitama near Tokyo

Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard's sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image will result in removal from Grandmasters and reduction of the player's prize total to $0 United States dollars, in addition to other remedies which may be provided for under the Handbook and Blizzard's Website Terms.

And while the tweet was quickly deleted, the reaction from China has been swift and severe, with the Rockets going from one of the country's favorite teams to a blacklisted one nearly overnight.

Chung "Blitzchung" Ng Wai, a pro Hearthstone player from Hong Kong, ended a stream earlier this week with a statement of support for those engaged in months-long protests against local police and government. While the tweet was quickly deleted, the backlash was swift. Then, when one of the fans responded by yelling "Free Hong Kong", they were removed from the arena. China has never look fondly on outsiders commenting on their own political strifes, which is why Morey finds himself in a hard position after doing something he's always been known to do - express his opinion.

Nonetheless, the fallout from the tweet continues in China. As a result, evidence that Sixers star Ben Simmons has finally learned how to shoot was overshadowed by the NBA's latest effort to curry favor with China's oppressive regime.

"And that's exactly what Americans and National Basketball Association fans don't want to see their commissioner say", Dees added.

China's state broadcaster canceled its plans to air the preseason game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets.

"Maybe the NBA could grow a spine right now", said Payne, as NBA Commissioner Adam Silver prepares to travel to Shanghai.

Later, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver clarified the league's stance, saying that he won't censor players or team owners over China or other issues, arguing that the league is motivated by much more than money, and freedom of expression must be protected. Disney's live-actionMulanremake, for example, has become a controversial issue in China Crystal Liu Yifei Hong Kong's military on Weibo.

Ng Wai Chung, known by his gaming handle "Blitzchung", was banned from the platform Blizzard, where he was competing in a Hearthstone tournament, after a post-game interview supporting protesters in Hong Kong. I think Silver did a remarkable job with his statement, but this is a senior official, well aware of the importance of the Chinese market. Does anyone think a single person connected to the league will dare call their bluff in the name of supporting human rights in Hong Kong?

The move drew bipartisan criticism from lawmakers on Twitter. But he sided with the principles that we all hold dearly, or most of us did until the last three years.

The National Basketball Association continues to abase and disgrace itself (this was better, but still not almost sufficient), making clear that maintaining its lucrative gravy train to the huge Chinese market is more important than standing up for American values such as freedom of speech, small-'L' liberal institutions, and democracy. "Implications of this will be felt long after everyone in USA politics today is gone", he added.
