Essential CEO Shares Images Of Tall Mystery Phone

Andy Rubin tweets photos of shapely new Essential phone

In fact, the new UI is partly what helps suggest this is the Essential Phone follow up.

Android founder Andy Rubin is giving a sneak peak to what might be the next Essential smartphone - and apparently it has a very narrow display.

Essential didn't provide any details or specifications on this Project GEM device, but posted two images on Twitter.

As well as highlighting the colours, and hence showing off the volcano-like camera bump with finger print sensor below, Rubin trumpeted the PH-2's "new UI for radically different form factor".

No word on when we can expect this new handset to show up in consumers' hands. However, from the images we could see the handset running a Maps app with widgets on audio streaming apps, clock, Gallery and some shortcuts to Phone, Camera, Messages and more. However, Andy Rubin's smartphone startup might be on the verge of releasing a second, much stranger phone. The phone also has a single rear camera. Well, we have been waiting for an answer to all of these questions and well, it seems like Rubin has kept himself busy with the development of a new phone, which could be the Essential Phone 2.

Rubin shared the images of the phone earlier on his official Twitter account.

At the rear of the device, there's a large single-camera module on the phone, along with a odd recessed circular... thing. According to Rubin, the devices are fitted in a "GEM Colorshift" material, which has a reflective metallic sheen.

The company has confirmed that the Essential phone is now under testing, which means we shouldn't be expecting a launch anytime soon. The company plans to share more "in the near future".

There is now no release date or pricing information for Essential's upcoming Project GEM smartphone. Although, Google might not certify this device because the form factor is so odd - it just can't render most apps correctly.
