The host said, "But it is cinema isn't it?" to which Downey Jr. said, "Well, it plays in theatres". "I gotta take a look at that, you know?"

That seems like a odd reason to turn down a potential Oscar nom - anyone brought to tears by Iron Man's final moments can't argue that Downey doesn't deserves a nod - but whatever floats your boat.

Now it's Robert Downey Jr.'s turn to defend the blockbuster franchise. "I tried, you know?"

Legendary filmmaker Scorsese had told Variety over the weekend: 'Honestly, the closest I can think of [Marvel films], as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks'.

As you might expect, Robert Downey Jr. doesn't feel insulted and isn't getting all riled up over Martin Scorsese's comments.

Recently, Disney revealed their For Your Consideration page for Avengers: Endgame, and there was a curious omission from the list of potential nominees: Robert Downey Jr.

She also answered whether or not she fell into the same way of thinking about film as Scorsese as she said: 'I would absolutely say that Marvel movies are cinema.

During his conversation with the "Iron Man" star, Downey Jr. told Stern he was involved in an argument in the green room right before he came into the studio.

'It's his opinion, ' Downey said.

Disney has high hopes for Avengers: Endgame at the Oscars, but Robert Downey Jr. isn't suggested for a nomination. The Irishman director said: "I don't see them". RDJ explained to Howard Stern that he'd experienced a rather awkward encounter in the show's green room with an unnamed Hollywood executive.

Scorsese's comments gained traction after he compared the Marvel Cinematic Universe to "theme parks", adding, "It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being". "Well there's a reason why "I'm always angry".

'Everybody's got an opinion, so I mean it's okay.

"In his view - and by the way, there's a lot to be said for how these genre movies, and I was m happy to be part of the problem if there is one - denigrated the art form of cinema". "When you come in like a stomping beast and you eliminate the competition in such a demonstrative way, it's phenomenal".

Marvel directors James Gunn and Joss Whedon have also defended Marvel movies in the wake of the famed director's comments.
