The Redskins have fired head coach Jay Gruden

Redskins reset Weighty on and off-the-field matters plaguing Jay Gruden players entering Patriots matchup

A person familiar with the team's plans told The Associated Press that offensive line coach Bill Callahan would replace Gruden on an interim basis. "Gruden was informed of the decision early Monday morning by Owner Daniel Snyder and President Bruce Allen", said the Redskins in a statement released to the media. But then Houston's J.J. Watt landed on Smith, causing the quarterback's leg to snap - an injury that ultimately required several surgeries to remove infections.

Gruden was 35-49-1 with Washington since taking over in 2014. But Tomlin is on the verge of his first losing season as head coach and the second consecutive year without making the playoffs. Linebacker Reuben Foster, expected to be a key part of this year's defense, was injured on the first play of offseason practices and was lost for the year.

In 2018, the Redskins' offense - with Gruden as the play-caller, ranked 29th in total offense, 28th in passing offense and 17th in rushing offense. He was disorganized, lacked attention to detail, could never hire the right defensive coordinator, and he had a hard time getting his team prepared physically for the long season. "I'll just wait and see", said Gruden, whose contract ran through next season. I've got good players, I've got a good staff.

Gruden is Snyder's eighth coach in 20 seasons and the seventh to be fired.

Mike Tomlin, Todd Bowles and Eric Bieniemy are three possible candidates for Washington's head coaching vacancy, according to a source close to Dan Snyder who is familiar with his thinking at the moment. He was only four games into that extension when he was sacked.
