US President Donald Trump "encouraged" Prime Minister Narendra Modi to improve relations with Pakistan and fulfill his promise to better the lives of the Kashmiri people, according to a readout issued by the White House of the bilateral meeting between the two leaders.

Modi also showered Trump with equivalent amounts of praise.

"President Trump is strongly with us in this fight, and he has shown determination to fight against terrorism", PM Modi said, and asked the audience to applaud the USA president.

Asking American investors to partner with India which is a "golden opportunity", Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke about the reforms his government has taken that has boosted confidence in the country.

Asked whether there was any possibility of him meeting his Indian counterpart while they are in NY, he said, "For a start, they have to lift the curfew, that's the beginning".

Trump also reported it would be great if Modi and Pakistani Key Minister Imran Khan can take care of their standoff around the disputed location of Kashmir.

Indian officials have skirted any direct reply on Mr Trump's repeated offer to mediate.

During a question-answer session after addressing the Bloomberg Global Business Forum here, Prime Minister Modi also asked people to remain vigilant against fake news on social media.

Indian newspaper The Hindu reported that the trade deal could not happen because India and the U.S. were unable to reach an agreement on the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) avenue.

'Under PM Modi's leadership, the world is witnessing a strong, sovereign republic of India, ' he told those gathered at the NRG Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Although a much expected trade deal between India and the USA was not announced after the meeting, Trump made it clear that the two countries were close to a mutual understanding on differences.

Terming the issue as a "complex" one and one that has been going on for a long time, Donald Trump said, "I am ready, willing and able. If you want to invest in start-ups with a huge market, come to India.If you want to invest in one of the world's largest infrastructure ecosystem, come to India", he said.

He said the success of the Clean India mission has benefited women the most, as in rural areas women had to wait for it to get dark to venture to the fields to relieve themselves.

The US wants India to do away with price controls on devices with innovative features and keep them separate from mass products.

Trump was asked what he thought of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's controversial admission that the Pakistani ISI trained Al Qaeda.

India, he said, blamed Pakistan for terrorism.

"I judge to this point as Pakistan is anxious, India, they're speaking, I'm indubitably willing to wait on". Since then, about 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which India sees as a proxy war by Pakistan.

Modi called US President Trump his true friend during the speech and said, "Abki baar Trump sarkar".

Asked what options are left for him if the global community doesn't respond, Khan said, "What options do we have apart from this?"
