'It's a war zone': Propane explosion kills firefighter, injures 6 others in Maine

When the maintenance director went in to investigate, the building exploded, he said.

Landry says that he doesn't know specifics of their injuries but that they were taken to hospitals with better-equipped trauma centers.

Landry tells our media partner, WMTW that the LEAP building was a few months old. At least six others were injured.

"Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this tragedy, especially to the loved ones of the firefighter lost and others injured", Mills said.

H. Scott Landry, a Farmington selectman and ME state representative, told the Bangor Daily News that five firefighters and LEAP's building maintenance manager were taken to a hospital.

Sen. Angus King also issued a statement, saying he is "devastated by the news of the serious explosion in Farmington", and that "my thoughts are with the first responders working at this moment, the family of the fallen firefighter, and the Franklin County community".

"My stepdad was first on scene after the explosion", he told CNN.

People inside the building smelled smoke shortly before the explosion and were able to evacuate in time, a town spokesperson said.

LEAP, which stands for Life Enrichment Advancing People, is a group that provides services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, according to its website. The explosion occurred after firefighters arrived.

The explosion closed down roads in Farmington, a town of about 7,700 people about 35 miles northwest of the state capital, Augusta.

Kim Hilton, who works in the admissions department at the nearby University of ME at Farmington, said there were scary moments when the blast occurred. Further details weren't immediately available.

Images from the scene show debris floating in the smoky air.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department in ME responded to the situation and firefighters are working hard to prevent further damages.
