We're Getting a Harvest Moon on Friday the 13th

In 2018 Dennis Doucet took this

The Harvest Moon got its name because farmers are able to work late into the night because of the moon's light.

For 2019, the September 13-14 Full Moon is this year's Harvest Moon because it occurs just 10 days before the Equinox, whereas the October 13-14 Full Moon is 20 days after.

Normally, a full moon occurs at a specific moment.

"There's a really well known illusion, which [occurs] when the moon is low on the horizon - particularly when it's a full moon it shows up really well", he says.

"As the Sun's light faded in the west, the Moon would soon rise in the east to illuminate the fields throughout the night". And don't forget to look in the sky in the early morning, when the moon is setting.

You see, a "Harvest Moon" is a uniquely Northern Hemisphere phenomenon, he explains. Instead, try to watch it as it appears on the eastern horizon at around sunset on Friday, glowing a pale orange and very easy to gaze at.

In the USA, the Harvest Moon of 2019 will reach its peak on September 14 at 12:33 am. If you do plan to visit a location, respect the environment.

A Harvest moon rises over some fields in Marcellus, New York, in September 2016. Add in the skips and jumps both schedules make from time to time (especially with Full Moons in the 2100s!), and putting these two events on the same day gets even tougher!

You've probably heard the term "supermoon" bandied about in recent times, but a "micromoon"?

Not only is this a Harvest Moon, but it's also a Micro Moon; the name given to a moon that is farthest away in its elliptical path as it orbits Earth.

A Harvest Moon is the Full Moon that falls closest to - either before or after - the Autumnal Equinox. A full micro moon doesn't next occur until October 1, 2020.

When is the next full moon? "In the Pacific Northwest, the Haida called it the cedar bark moon, according to the "Tlingit Moon and Tide Teaching Resource" published by the University of Alaska in Fairbanks".

In February of 2018, the exact opposite happened when a supermoon graced the sky. A song called "Shine On, Harvest Moon" was penned in 1908 by vaudeville stars Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth.
