New SNL cast member hit by racism row

SNL Season 45- New Cast

Bowen Yang won't be alone during his first season as a featured player on Saturday Night Live, either.

In the two-minute clip from an episode titled "Ka-Pow", Gillis and co-host Matt McCusker denigrate Chinatown; in addition to using the anti-Chinese slur, Gillis mimics a Chinese accent and mocks the conventions of Chinese restaurants. He goes on to say, "Let the f***ing ch***s live there".

Bowen Yang who, along with Chloe Fineman and Shane Gillis, will join the cast of "Saturday Night Live, ' premiering its 45th season on September 28".

The video appears to be from a podcast recording of Gillis' two-man show, which airs on the Bonfire on Sirius XM.

Update, 10:07PM ET, Thursday 09/12:Vulture has unearthed Shane Gillis' history of using racist and homophobic slurs over the past couple of years, including an incident where he rants about "white faggot comics" and an instance of him using race, gender, and orientation to rank how amusing comedians are.

Shane Gillis is kind of sorry.

A few hours later, Gillis' response - which stopped well short of being an actual apology - and defended his use of racist tropes as "a comedian who pushes boundaries". "My intention is never to hurt anyone but I am trying to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that requires risks".

So far, Saturday Night Live has only announced one cast departure for the new season.

Yang became the fourth cast member of Asian descent following Rob Schneider, Fred Armisen, and Nasim Pedrad (who hails from Iran which is considered Western Asia).

Yang joined "SNL" last season as a staff writer, and is the host of a podcast called "Las Culturistas".

NBC has not yet released a comment on the emerging scandal.
