NASA joins hands with ISRO in reaching out to Vikram lander

Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram Lander

Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought "bad luck" to ISRO when he came to Bengaluru to witness the landing of Chandrayaan-2 leading to the space agency losing contact with the lander "Vikram".

It is also reported that the American space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is sending radio signals to Vikram.

Isro scientists have been trying to re-establish contact with the lander.

It is no secret that ISRO's Chandrayaan-2 mission wasn't a complete success after all communication with the Vikram lander was lost after a hard landing on the moon's south pole.

How much time does ISRO have to track Vikram Lander?

Not only this, the NASA will also share before and after images of the location where Chandrayaan 2's Vikram lander made a hard-landing.

A day later, reports quoting an unnamed ISRO official said that the hard-landing was "very close to the planned (touch-down) site as per the images sent by the on-board camera of the orbiter"."The lander is there as a single piece, not broken into pieces".

"This is a very groundbreaking development", she said, adding that the mission will pave way for better understanding and a new approach towards the Moon and missions for the scientists to come.

Despite that, there still exists the possibility that by using the right orientation, the Vikram lander might be able to generate power and recharge its batteries using solar panels. After revolving around the Earth's orbit for almost 23 days, the craft began its journey to the moon on August 14.

The connection between the lander Vikram and the orbiter snapped on the early hours of September 7 when it was supposed to conduct a soft landing. During the lunar night period, instruments on board the lander could get damaged.
