Labour deputy sets up Corbyn row with call for referendum before election

In a bombshell intervention deepening Labour's civil war over Europe, the deputy leader will today claim the 2016 vote was too long ago to be valid, and that a single-issue election would not break the Brexit deadlock.

During his speech, the Labour leader said he refused to let the election be dictated on the prime minister's terms and committed to delivering a campaign for a second referendum which would include a "credible option to Leave and Remain".

A number of Mr Corbyn's colleagues want the party to unequivocally back Remain, but big backer the Unite union wants to ensure Leave is still an option. "But the only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum".

Speaking in London on Wednesday, Mr Watson will say: "My experience on the doorstep tells me most of these who've deserted us more than our Brexit policy did so with deep regret and would enormously favor to occur back they just want us to acquire an unequivocal situation that whatsoever happens we are going to combat to stay, and to sound like we indicate it".

But once it has done that, MPs should focus on securing a referendum before an election.

"And clean up the mess left by the Tories".

As former Labour leader Tony Blair advocated at the start of this month, and as MPs such as Peter Kyle have also said, Watson will make the case for resolving the Brexit question with a referendum before holding an election.

He will say the scale of the damage Mr Johnson is threatening the country with is "worse than Thatcher" and claim the prime minister has "naked contempt" for democratic institutions - not just the European Union, but parliament, the British constitution and the Conservative Party.

Despite having twice blocked the government's bid for a snap election, Corbyn is in campaign mode as the United Kingdom gears up for a national ballot expected in the fall.

"He's trying to trash them all", he will add.

'This latest trick would mean delaying Brexit again for up to a year, handing over £250million a week to Brussels for no objective'.

"Labour are running scared of an election and only offer more dither and pointless delay".

"A few weeks after the IRA blew up a hotel in Brighton and murdered five people at the Tory party conference the leader of the opposition invited two suspected IRA terrorists to Parliament".

The UK prime minister made a decision to send MPs home through October 14, but first tried to call a snap election to ensure his parliamentary majority, but the House of Commons twice opposed that proposal. They demonstrate that it is the only party with a vision radical enough to tackle the deep-rooted systemic problems we face. "A general election might well fail to solve this Brexit chaos". But there eventually comes a point - and we are very far past it now, well into the fourth year since the referendum - when circumstances are so changed.
