For 9/11 families, mixed views on Trump-Taliban talks

Blast heard near U.S. Embassy in Kabul on 9/11 anniversary

The meeting at Camp David between the US president and the Taliban narco-terrorist group would have taken place last Sunday, days before the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the American homeland.

Trump has cited the death of a US service member in one of those blasts as the reason why he now calls the US-Taleban talks "dead".

The American president had come under severe criticism for inviting the Taliban to Camp David even by supporters such as Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who wrote on Twitter, "Camp David is where America's leaders met to plan our response after al Qaeda, supported by the Taliban, killed 3000 Americans on 9/11". In turn, the Taliban vowed to continue fighting against American forces in Afghanistan after the USA president withdrew from peace talks.

Under a peace deal, the USA would have withdrawn its troops mainly in exchange for Taliban assurances that it will not allow Afghanistan to become a haven for terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL).

Driving another nail into the coffin of what had appeared to be almost finalized negotiations, Trump said a U.S. military onslaught on the guerrillas was at its fiercest level in a decade.

The proposed meeting came after nine rounds of talks between U.S. and Taliban negotiators in Doha.

'They're useless. So far as I'm involved, they're useless, ' Trump stated on the White Home. No member of the Taliban should set foot there.

Before he was ordered to return home from the region, US chief negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad said his team of negotiators had drawn up a draft framework agreement that, if approved by Trump, would allow 5,000 American troops to leave five military bases in the country within 135 days. A U.S. service member was also killed.

Most Afghans dreaded the "deal" between the USA and the Taliban.

He stated this was in retaliation for the killing of a USA soldier by the Taliban in an enormous Kabul bomb blast final week. The government has been fighting the Taliban, which has been waging a war against Kabul for nearly two decades. "But at the end of the day, President Trump wants out of Afghanistan". Several called the timing unfortunate but the idea of talks worthwhile, a potential path toward peace for Afghans and Americans tired of Washington's longest war. That, Khalilzad had said, was for the Afghans to work out with the Taliban.

"I don't see where those negotiations go".

"So many people have forgotten the sacrifices and the price paid on 9/11", he said.
