Cleveland Cavaliers beloved play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod dies

The Cleveland Cavaliers lost a beloved family member on Monday night, when longtime play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod died suddenly, the team said in a statement. In light of McLeod's passing, former Cavs superstar LeBron James posted a heart-felt dedication on Twitter with his condolences. No details regarding a cause of death have been released.

McLeod had been calling Cavs games since 2006 alongside Austin Carr. and was a fan favorite in Cleveland.

Play-by-play broadcaster Fred McLeod died Monday evening. He recently celebrated his 36th season in broadcasting.

A native of Strongsville, OH, McLeod was 57 and had spent almost four decades in broadcasting. He spent 22 seasons announcing games for the Detroit Pistons before returning to Cleveland.

He called more than 1,000 games during his tenure with the organization, where he also served as the Cavaliers' Executive Producer for Media.

He was the Cavaliers television play-by-play announcer on FOX Sports Ohio since the 2006 season.

McLeod is survived by his wife, Beth, a TV meteorologist in Cleveland, and three children, Sean, Jenna and Molly. Fred spent the 1979 MLB baseball season in Cleveland as well, as a TV announcer for the Cleveland Indians. In the video, McLeod's passion for the team and skill as an announcer are both on full display.

To add to his impressive resume, just this summer, McLeod became the new play-by-play voice for the Detroit Lions preseason games.
