Samsung's Galaxy Fold finally launches on its home turf this week

Galaxy Fold

The South Korean company will also introduce its first foldable device in other markets including France, Germany, Singapore, US, UK and more.

The company was earlier speculated to launch the foldable smartphone by the end of September, but Samsung made a decision to push up on the date - in a bid to ensure that people are able to buy the device, just as Apple readies it new iPhone lineup.

Samsung has not revealed its plans for the production volume of the Galaxy Fold, but it will not be a high volume model given the price.

This radical new device was first unveiled back in February with Samsung boasting how its new gadget could instantly switch from a smartphone into a fully functional tablet.

The hinge, which feels incredibly satisfying yet equally treacherous to open and close, has also been hardened, with Samsung adding protection caps to strengthen the mechanism and to ensure no dust gets underneath the screen.

Additional metal layers have been added under the display to make it sturdier and less prone to denting. Another problem was created when debris entered one of the review units through an opening in the Galaxy Fold's hinge. That puts it up against formidable smartphone competition, however Samsung's pitch for the Fold is that it defines its own new niche. After initially blaming the reviewers, Samsung postponed the launch.

Samsung extended the Galaxy Fold screen's protective polymer layer under the phone's bezels, making the protective layer hard to notice and more difficult to remove, according to CNet. As for the United States, the company announced the device will arrive in the coming weeks. Limited numbers are headed out to South Korea this week, and European availability will pick up where that leaves off shortly. When it comes to a plastic flexible display that folds in half, there are bound to be little variations and changes over time. In its press release Samsung teases that it will be sharing more information about "this exciting new chapter for consumers-and the entire mobile industry".

Nicely timed with the company's annual outing at IFA, Samsung earlier today has announced that its Galaxy Fold is heading to stores in select markets throughout the world starting from tomorrow onwards.
