Satellite Imagery Shows Extent Of Devastating Flooding On Grand Bahama Island

In this NOAA GOES-East satellite handout image Hurricane Dorian moves slowly past Grand Bahama Island

Dorian is tied with the 1935 Labor Day hurricane as the strongest storm to hit land in the Atlantic.

Chances are, Hurricane Dorian will at the very least graze the so-called Space Coast of Florida, including NASA's Kennedy Space Center, where personnel have spent almost a week preparing for potential wind and rain from the storm.

Will it make landfall in SC?

"We have not seen much resistance at all", he stated. The American Red Cross said they've already opened 170 shelters and evacuation centers and over 13,000 people are already at those facilities.

Beach erosion and coastal flooding are likely.

Despite its downgrade, Hurricane Dorian is still risky and expected to remain so in the coming days, according to the National Hurricane Center. A turn to the north is forecast by the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 4, followed by a turn to the north-northeast the following morning.

Hurricane Dorian came to a catastrophic daylong halt over the northwest Bahamas, flooding the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama with walls of water.

At 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, our local area saw its first Tropical Storm force winds, the St. Augustine Beach Pier saw sustained winds of 44 miles per hour and a wind gust measured at 52 miles per hour. That's a sharp decrease from Sunday, when the storm was a category 5 hurricane, packing sustained winds of up to 185 miles per hour.

Minnis told reporters that Dorian was "one of the greatest national crises in our country's history". "Raining. Breezy - not windy".

However, it appears unlikely now that Dorian will make landfall in Florida, instead getting "dangerously close to the coast" later today through Wednesday night and Thursday.

Those under a tropical storm warning are north of Deerfield Beach to Jupiter Inlet and north of Ponte Vedra Beach to Altamaha Sound, Georgia.

People on the US coast made final preparations for a storm with winds at a still-dangerous 105 miles per hour, making it a Category 2 storm.

"That's what we're hearing and hoping doesn't happen", one emergency responder told this news outlet, referring to the ominous reports coming out of the Lowcountry.

Minnis vowed that the government "will bring to bear every resource possible and all of our collective energy to assist those in the devastated and affected areas".

The hurricane season typically peaks between mid-August and late October.

And here is a look at projected rainfall totals associated with the storm ...

The tropical storm force-wind field is brushing against South Florida right now, and it will continue to linger Tuesday.

Tropical Depression 7 has formed and the National Hurricane Center is tracking three potential storms that could become the next tropical depression.
