Minnesota Twins Slug MLB Home Run Record and It's Only August!

268 and counting: Mitch Garver's home run gives Twins' single-season record

Mitch Garver hit the record-breaking dinger - his second of the evening - in the ninth inning off Detroit Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez. Detroit sent 12 men to the plate in the third.

Martín Perez (Nine-6) allowed seven earned runs in 2 2/Three innings. "They don't get base hits, they get home runs". It was Walker's fourth home run in 10 at-bats off Kershaw, matching Adam Dunn for the most home runs off the three-time NL Cy Young Award victor. Miguel Cabrera put the Tigers up Three-2 with an RBI double, and Rodriguez adopted with a two-run shot. Strasburg retired the final 22 batters he faced, a career-best feat. He has been extremely consistent for Detroit since being called up in early August, and he had another great night tonight going two-for-four with an RBI. Rendon has 31 homers this season, Soto has 30 and Suzuki 15. The Twins started out aggressively and hitting three straight singles after getting a leadoff walk. He's allowed a major league-high 36 home runs in 2019.

Suzuki went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Marlins extended the franchise record with their 14th consecutive road loss. He walked none and struck out one in what was tied for his shortest performance of the season.

Christian Walker and Wilmer Flores hit back-to-back homers to erase an early deficit, and Arizona held on to win its third straight game against visiting Los Angeles. Rendon won a nine-pitch battle, hitting three fouls and taking three balls before pouncing on a fastball and pulling it over the left field fence.

The win came at a cost though as Freddie Freeman left the game for the Braves in the sixth, four innings after being hit by a pitch on the left foot.

The Twins took a 5-0 lead in the second.

The Padres broke the tie in the eighth when Manny Machado tripled to lead off the inning against the fourth Giants pitcher, Tony Watson (2-2), and scored on a one-out single by Josh Naylor. Another hit by pitch - this time to Rendon - sparked Washington's next rally in the third.

In a year when home runs have become so common that some observers fear they are hurting the game, it's hard to put into perspective how far from the norm the home run explosion is by baseball's cherished historical standards. The Marlins made little noise all night until Lewis Brinson barked at an eighth-inning strike call on a 3-2Strasburg curve that caught the top of the zone.
