Scientists say climate change generally has been fueling more powerful and wetter storms, and the only recorded hurricane more powerful than Dorian was Allen in 1980, with 190 miles per hour (305 kph) winds, though it did not hit land at that strength.

A life-threatening storm surge will reportedly raise water levels by as much as 18 to 23 feet above normal tide levels at the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island.

Hurricane Dorian's eye is slowly moving northwestward.

In Wilmington, North Carolina, Christina Dowe said she bought a new home in November after her home was almost destroyed by Hurricane Florence. At least five people have died in the Bahamas, including a 7-year-old child, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said.

The National Hurricane Center forecasts Dorian to have moved north of the Carolinas by kickoff. The storm is lingering over the islands, continuing to pound the same devastated places.

Dorian was tied with Gilbert (1988), Wilma (2005) and the 1935 Labor Day hurricane for the second-strongest Atlantic hurricane on record, based on maximum sustained winds. Legoland Florida, further inland in Winter Haven, said it would be closed Tuesday but expected to reopen Wednesday depending on the storm's track.

The hurricane weakened to a Category 2 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale early on Tuesday, with maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. As of the 9 a.m. update, Dorian remains a Category 3 storm with 115-mph winds.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Dorian is forecast to be 40 to 50 miles (64 to 80 kilometers) off Florida, with hurricane-force wind speeds extending about 35 miles (56 kilometers) to the west. Highs will be in the mid 90's to start the week, with upper 90's possible by the end of the weekend.

Nine counties in Florida have issued mandatory evacuation orders.

However, the most recent advisory projected the storm wouldn't make landfall in the United States, at all.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Grand Bahama and the Abacos Islands in the northwestern Bahamas, in Florida from Jupiter Inlet to Ponte Vedra Beach, and in SC from north of Edisto Beach to the South Santee River. Polk County, where Legoland is located, is under a tropical storm watch.
