South Africa police struggling amid latest xenophobic attacks

Zulu hostel dwellers in Jeppestown gather before Bheki Cele arrives to address them gathered that numerous targeted shops were reported to be owned by foreign nationals. "Nothing. has sparked any form of conflict between the South Africans and foreign nationals".

The Federal Government on Monday confirmed the attack on Nigerian businesses in South Africa.

Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, says Nigerian shops in South Africa are being looted and burnt by mindless criminals with ineffective police protection.

The report was released after a recent spate of xenophobic violence fuelled by economic decline and record unemployment in Africa's most industrialised economy.

According to police, the chaotic clashes followed the deaths of three people in a fire in an "old building".

It was gathered that on Monday, September 2, the violence spread to the nearby area of Jeppestown before reaching other areas of the city such as Denver, Malvern and Tembisa.

"People of South Africa are hungry, they are sitting at home... while companies in South Africa are employing foreigners ...(because) its cheap labour".

It is important to see these events within its context. The unemployment rate in South Africa is almost 28% and this places huge pressure on the lower end of the social ladder.

At least 41 people were arrested after hundreds of people marched through Johannesburg's Central Business District (CBD), plundering shops and torching cars and buildings, the police said in a statement. It was further learnt that some Nigerians are now hiding in bushes due to the violence meted out by South Africans. The portals add that looters have targeted businesses of foreigners.
