Evacuations in Bahamas as Hurricane Dorian nears

Hurricane Dorian Disney Universal other parks are watching storm but no closings yet

In statement, officials said, "Orlando International Airport will continue normal operations on Monday".

The Emergency Management Division says residents in SC should begin the necessary preparations for the possible effects of Hurricane Dorian.

On its current path, forecasters say the storm could spare the USA a direct hit, but still threatens Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas with powerful winds and rising ocean water that could cause deadly flooding. "While some fluctuations in intensity are possible, but Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days". The state, including inland areas, could begin feeling the storm's winds and rains by mid-week, or as soon as Wednesday.

Forecasters expect Dorian, with winds of up to 150 miles per hour, to hit northwestern Bahamas on Sunday before curving upward.

Trump warned that Georgia "is very much in (the hurricane's) path also".

Dorian still sits in the western Atlantic Ocean and just east of the Bahamas, where hurricane warnings have already been issued.

"The risk of strong winds and risky storm surge is increasing along the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina during the middle of next week", the advisory states.

"And higher winds than Matthew".

"Do not be foolish and try to fearless out this hurricane", Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said at a news conference, according to WPLG.

Last year, Hurricane Michael killed at least 59 people in the Florida area, leaving $25 billion in repairs; Andrew killed 65 people in August 1992, with a $27 billion clean-up for the state; and Camille struck the Louisiana-Mississippi region killing more than 250 people, causing $10 billion in damage in today's dollars.

A risky Hurricane Dorian is closing in on the northern Bahamas, threatening to batter the normally idyllic islands with fierce winds, pounding waves and torrential rain. Seven of those 14 storms struck Florida.

Fuel trucks have been working all night to replenish diminished gas supplies but "obviously as the track has shifted a little bit you're naturally going to see less people, say in Miami-Dade County, waiting in line for gas".

Based on its central pressure, Hurricane Michael was the third strongest landfalling hurricane ever recorded in the United States.

The National Hurricane Center noted the following: "Dorian is moving toward the west near 8 miles per hour (13 km/h), and a slower westward motion should continue for the next day or two, followed by a gradual turn toward the northwest".

Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency for North Carolina on Friday in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian, allowing the state's price gouging law to go into effect, and to prepare the state to provide relief measures in the future should they be needed.

Dorian will keep moving westward through the weekend but is forecast to turn northward, towards the Carolinas, as it approaches the east coast of Florida early next week, the center said. "Residents in East Coast counties should continue to monitor local reports and stay vigilant", he warned Saturday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks to the media outside the National Hurricane Center during a press conference about the status of Hurricane Dorian on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, in Miami.

"Looking like our great SC could get hit MUCH harder than first thought".

The National Hurricane Center says Dorian could almost stall over Great Abaco Island or Grand Bahama Island for more than 24 hours starting late Sunday.

Over two or three days, the hurricane could dump as much as one metre of rain, unleash devastating winds and whip up an abnormal and risky rise in sea level called storm surge, according to private meteorologist Ryan Maue and some of the most reliable computer models.

Both Grand Bahama and Abaco are hubs of the Bahamas tourist industry, which plays a vital part in the island chain's economy.
