Hurricane Dorian Now Category 4 Storm, Approaches Bahamas, Florida

Dorian a Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds remains a direct threat to NW Bahamas and Florida East Coast northward...but glimmer of hope for some...

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the risk of "strong winds and life-threatening storm surge" will increase along the Georgia and SC coasts by the middle of next week.

Forecasters on Saturday said the ever-strengthening Dorian is expected to dance up the Southeast coastline, staying just off shore of Florida and skirting the coast of Georgia, with the possibility of landfall still a threat on Wednesday, and then continuing up to SC early Thursday.

Georgia's parks are open to receive storm evacuees and their pets, though most camps and cabins are full through Labor Day but open after Monday and overflow room is available, the Department of Natural Resources tweeted.

With the current forecast, Georgia and the Carolinas are now at risk for landfall on Wednesday into Thursday.

Hurricane Dorian strengthened into a powerful Category 4 storm overnight, with astronauts and satellites capturing stunning views of the storm's eye from space today (Aug. 31).

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation said hotels and resorts throughout that part of the island nation have activated hurricane response programmes, which typically include boarding up beach-facing windows and encouraging guests to leave.

Hurricane Dorian shut down most major resorts in the Bahamas and forced authorities to evacuate much of the northern shore and low-lying islands Saturday as the fierce Category 4 storm prepared to unleash torrents of rain but was projected to spin farther away from the coast of the Southeast U.S. next week.

"Do not be foolish and try to fearless out this hurricane", Minnis said.

Hurricane conditions are expected in the northwestern Bahamas by Sunday, and the storm is expected to near Florida's coast late Monday. Wind speeds are expected to reach 145 mph over the next 36 hours, then weaken to 130 miles per hours over the following two days. "The thing I'm anxious about is the state of Florida ... this could be a record-setting hurricane".

It's still too early to tell where and when the hurricane will make landfall, Shackelford said.

Dorian was expected to move over the Atlantic "well north of the southeastern and central Bahamas" Saturday, and to be near or over the northwestern Bahamas on Sunday.
