The Indianapolis Coltsquarterback heard boos as he walked away from the field, then walked to the podium and made the surprise decision official.
"For the last four years or so, I've been in this cycle of injury, pain, rehab, injury, pain, rehab, and it's been unceasing, unrelenting, both in-season and offseason, and I felt stuck in it".
While some fans booed Luck as he left the field Saturday night, other players supported him.
"I think the second is a little disgust, maybe, at the way that it was handled", Rodgers said of his reaction to Rodger's decision and the aftermath.
Luck - who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 National Football League draft - made his official return last fall and appeared back to normal, throwing for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns.
"I feel exhausted, and not just in the physical sense", he said. "And I understand that". "This young man has done a lot for the city of Indianapolis and for the Indianapolis Colts". "The only way forward is to remove myself from this cycle". Most recently, he'd been dealing with an ankle injury and was watching the team's practice or preseason games from the sideline. It was initially called a calf issue before the ankle was determined to be the problem earlier this month.
He returned to limited action when training camp opened in late July. While he played almost all of the 2016 season, Luck's shoulder still impacted him - eventually forcing him to have surgery on it that offseason, which sidelined him for all of 2017.
The No 1 overall pick out of Stanford in 2012, Luck was widely considered the best quarterback prospect to enter the National Football League since Peyton Manning in 1998.
With Luck out of the picture, the Colts will rely on backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
ESPN'sAdam Schefter reported the news, saying in a tweet that Luck was simply "mentally worn down".
This may very well turn out to be the case for Indianapolis in regards to being a top contender, but also it's going to be interesting to see how this team adjusts to playing without the former No. 1 pick.
The Colts will face the Chargers in Week 1 of the regular season on September 8 in Los Angeles.
"We all expect we're going to play this game forever", Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson said. Luck is just 29 years old, and he finished his career with 171 touchdowns to 83 interceptions with a 53-33 record. News of Luck's decision leaked during last night's Indianapolis Colts preseason game. He has played in 20 games for the Colts over the past two seasons, throwing 13 touchdown passes.
Brissett was acquired from New England for Phillip Dorsett just before the 2017 season and is entering the final year of his contract.
