DiCaprio's foundation pledges $5M for Amazon fires

Amazon Fires Leonardo DiCaprio's Environmental Organisation Forms $5 Million Fund

The fund was started by Earth Alliance, the organization that DiCaprio co-founded with Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Shethe.

The initiative's official website also lists down the local organisations that will be benefitting from 100% of the donations that they receive-Instituto Associacao Floresta Protegida, Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon, Instituto Kabu, Instituto Raoni and Instituto Socioambiental. Many organizations have stepped up to help provide aid to the affection region and its indigenous population, including Earth Alliance, which launched the Amazon Forest Fund on Sunday.

The organization led by an independent team of scientists and conservationists has encouraged people to donate after its initial commitment of $5M.

Almost 40,000 fires have been incinerating Brazil's Amazon rainforest, the latest outbreak in an overactive fire season that has charred 1,330 square miles of the rainforest this year.

As per a statement by Earth Alliance, "The Amazon rainforest is on fire, with more than 9,000 wildfires scorching delicate, irreplaceable landscapes across Brazil this week, year to date, more than 72,000 fires have been reported by Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE)".

While Earth Alliance did not introduce Bolsonaro's name in its Amazon Forest Fund announcement, it did say that the fires were caused by a surge in deforestation thanks to "large-scale cattle operations and feed crops ―much of it illegal ― along with some impacts from logging".

The funds will be distributed between five local groups "combating the fires, protecting indigenous lands, and providing relief to the communities impacted". The immediate climate crisis is being blamed upon Brazil's President, Jair Bolsonaro, too, who rolled back environmental protections after taking the cabinet this year. Leonardo has been constantly posting on his social media, attempting to educate people about the fires in the Amazon Rainforest and the consequences of it on the planet and species.

"The Amazon Rainforest produces more than 20% of the world's oxygen and its been burning for the past 3 weeks". It is considered vital in slowing global warming.
