Pakistan calls on UNICEF to drop actress Priyanka Chopra as an ambassador

Priyanka Chopra

Chopra had faced intense criticism from fans in Pakistan for a tweet cheering the Indian armed forces with Pakistan's Human Rights Minsiter Shireen Mazari writing an open letter to United Nations to remove her from her post. According to a United Nations spokesperson, Priyanka Chopra can speak in a "personal capacity" and she "retains the right to speak about issues that interest or concerns" her.

When UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors "speak in their personal capacity, they retain the right to speak about issues that interest or concern them", Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said at his daily briefing on Thursday in answer to a question about Chopra.

If there is some kind of controversy and difference in point of view between an average Indian citizen (like Priyanka Chopra) and the Pakistani establishment, obviously her point of view will be an Indian point of view.

Chopra found herself in the eye of a storm after she was called out for tweeting "Jai Hind" in the wake of the Balakot airstrikes in February this year. "When they speak on behalf of the UNICEF, we expect them to adhere to UNICEF's evidence-based impartial positions", Mr Dujarric said.

"Their personal views or actions do not necessarily reflect those of UNICEF", he added.

Mazari alleged that the actress showed 'support of war including nuclear war'.

India's recent decision to revoke Article 370 of its constitution, which gave special rights to the Muslim-majority state, has worsened India's already fraught relations with Pakistan. Post the video of the Pakistani woman went viral, Priyanka's response to her divided social media users into two sides. The Dream Girl actor came out in support of Priyanka's tweet and mentioned that she is an army officer's daughter and hence, according to him was a good person to represent India globally.

Ayushmann said, "I guess Priyanka Chopra represents our country really well and she is not just an Indian icon she is a global icon". Now, Ayushmann Khurrana has come out in support of the global icon.
