Trump Cancels Denmark Visit since PM Won't Discuss Sale of Greenland

President Trump speaks with reporters in New Jersey on Sunday

Or is something darker and more risky happening within the West Wing? It remained unclear what actions Trump would be able to take to appease farmers upset that he had granted the waivers. Just look at his actions.

In a Tuesday night tweet, the president said Denmark is "a very special country with incredible people", but added that "based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting".

Larry Kudlow, head of the National Economic Council, had said Sunday that Greenland is a "strategic place", rich in valuable minerals, and that discussions are continuing. "Greenland is not danish".

"I obviously agree with him", she said.

Frederiksen said she is "disappointed and surprised" by Trump's decision to cancel, but does not believe it suggests any sort of "crisis" between Washington and Copenhagen.

Morten Ostergaard, the leader of Denmark's Social Liberal party, said Trump's move "shows why, more than ever, we should consider the European Union countries as our closest allies".

The tweet came a day after he acknowledged he was "strategically" interested in a deal but it's not a top priority. "That's where the conversation ends", Frederiksen told the Danish broadcaster DR.

"The United States and Romania proudly underscore the substantial trade growth between our two countries, as well as our common interest in shaping an investment climate that offers transparency, predictability, and stability".

"You don't talk to the US that way", Trump said.

A former foreign minister, Martin Lidegaard, told broadcaster TV2 that it was "diplomatic farce" for the United States president to "throw a hissy fit". As others have noted, the President is particularly bothered by women who refuse to do his bidding. It has high rates of suicide, alcoholism and unemployment.

The US president kept the row going in two tweets on Wednesday evening as he criticised Denmark's contribution to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

The president has been vocal about his interest in buying Greenland, which is owned by Denmark, but the country has dismissed his scouting efforts as "absurd", saying the semi-autonomous island is not for sale. If so, how has this helped?

The White House announced in late July that Mr Trump had accepted an invitation to visit Denmark's Queen Margrethe and participate in a series of meetings, including with Ms Frederiksen and business leaders.

He is due to visit Poland on August 31.

Rufus Gifford, who served in the Obama administration, called Trump's cancelation a "shame".

"We're going to Poland, and then we may be going to Denmark - not for this reason at all".

As for the Visa Waiver Program, a hot topic for the Romanian side, the statement says that the U.S.

The global situation would challenge the most capable and experienced president.

When asked if he would consider trading a United States territory for Greenland, Trump replied that "a lot of things could be done". Denmark actively supported the US-led invasion of Iraq beginning in 2003, even as France and Germany refused to do so.
