WordPad and Paint might become optional features for Windows 10

Microsoft is working to fix error 0x80073701 in Windows 10

It is unclear why updates for other supported Windows 10 versions were not released as well.

You'll find a collection of users in the Reddit Windows 10 forum and at least one fix from an intrepid IT fixer by the name of Caledon Ken seems to have appeared in TenForums... all the way back in the year 2018.

Microsoft recently warned users of critical vulnerabilities found across all versions of its operating systems, including Windows 10, and urged them to update systems immediately.

Applications that were made using Visual Basic 6 (VB6).

This would be a massive change as it will finally Microsoft to update Notepad without releasing a new version of Windows 10, ultimately enabling more frequent updates.

The company also noted on Twitter that the issue had been resolved in updates for Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008.

A few days after Microsoft announced the move, the Notepad app has just arrived in the Windows Store.

Tip: you can check the August listing on the Microsoft Update Catalog to monitor update releases. Windows 10 19H2 or the October 2019 Update is being tested through the Slow Ring Insiders, and users are hoping that without the burden of trying new features, Microsoft will be able to focus entirely on improving performance and quality of the operating system.

The Windows 10 October update also issues fixes related to downloading of the digital rights management (DRM) files from websites using Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer.

Other notable fixes include a memory leak in dwm.exe that "may lead to a loss of functionality and cause a device to stop working".

Microsoft did not reveal additional information about the issue at the time but the issue occurred shortly after Microsoft started to disable VBScript by default on machines running "older" versions of Windows.
