Benson attended Robert E. Lee High in Midland, Texas, and is considered among the greatest high school players in that state's history, finishing his career with 8,423 yards rushing. A Facebook post on Sunday morning from Benson's relative, Dominic Benson, read, "No no no no no no God no!"
Two days before the tragic accident, Benson appeared in court in Travis County to plead guilty to misdemeanor drunk-driving charges dating to February 2017, KVUE reported.
Benson was 36 years old. There will never be another one like him, and he will be dearly missed by so many. He was named the Doak Walker award victor and a consensus All-American as a senior.
Unfortunately, personal issues and legal troubles caused the Bears to release him after just three seasons.
Benson's career ended in 2012 after he suffered a Lisfranc injury to his foot while with Green Bay.
