A chance for Ravi Shastri to make amends

Former India captain Kapil Dev said that the top three finishers were Shastri at No. 1, Hesson at No. 2 and Moody at No. 3.

Former West Indies all-rounder Phil Simmons - who coached Zimbabwe, Ireland, West Indies, Afghanistan since his retirement in 2002 - was also in the fray along with former Australian medium pacer Tom Moody.

"We have unanimously chose to appoint Ravi Shastri as the (head) coach of the Indian cricket team as you all were expecting", CAC head Kapil Dev told mediapersons after the completion of the candidates' interviews that took place through the day.

Ravi Shastri has been retained as the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team.

Gaekwad felt that Shastri was "well versed with the Indian cricket system, and knew the boys and their problems well being the current coach". Kapil announced three names shortlisted based on parameters given - Tom Moody at number three, Hesson second and the Indian as first choice - for head coach position. Ravi Shastri to continue as India's Head Coach. Six candidates, including Shastri, were short-listed for the high-profile post of India Head coach, before former West Indies opener Phil Simmons pulled out of the race on Friday to leave five aspirants in the race. Robin Singh and Lalchand Rajput were the two others who made their presentation before the CAC. "And we have done really well together as a group", Kohli had said at the time. "Well, the CAC has not contacted me on this".

"Certainly not (sought Kohli's opinion)".

Shastri, who had a previous stint as team director between 2014-16, lost out to Anil Kumble in 2016 and then later succeeded him in July 2017 after the infamous Kumble-Kohli fallout.

Under his tenure, India recorded their first ever Test series win in Australia in 2019 after having lost on tours to South Africa and England in 2018.

India have won 11 out of 21 Tests, 43 out of 60 ODIs and 25 T20 Internationals out of 36 on his watch.

Shanta Rangaswamy, former India women's captain and coach, also stressed on the communication skills as the critical point. And it's a two year extension.

"All of them gave presentations on what's the way forward and we weighed it along with the past performances and that swung it in Ravi Shastri's favour", Shantha Rangaswamy gave the concluding reply.
