Norwegian Air ends all flights to Ireland on Sept 15

Grounding of Boeing 737 Max jets hits TUI's earnings

In a series of blows for global inbound tourism, Hainan Airlines has axed its Dublin to Shenzen route while Norwegian Air has axed all its transatlantic North American routes from Ireland.

Affected customers are being offered alternative travel arrangements and full refunds if they no longer wish to travel.

According to a report by CNBC, airlines around the world are pulling decades-old aircraft out of retirement to replace the grounded Boeing 737 Max fleet. CEO Fritz Joussen is expecting now that the adjusted operating profit of nearly Euro 1.2 billion in the current fiscal year to the end of September, up 26 percent year-on-year.

The airline Norwegian is to end flights between Ireland and North America from September 15th.

The airline have said "several thousand customers" will be impacted by the route closures.

The 737 MAX has been grounded worldwide following two fatal accidents that killed more than 300 people and both Boeing and airlines continue to extend the timelines for when it will return to service.

"Compounded by the global grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and the continued uncertainty of its return to service, this has led us to make the hard decision to discontinue all six routes from USA and Canada to Dublin, Cork and Shannon from September 16".

In July, Norwegian Air celebrated five years of long-haul flights from London Gatwick, which the airport said had precipitated a quadrupling in similar low-priced offerings from the airport.

Norwegian will cease transatlantic flights from Ireland.

Flights from the three Irish airports were introduced in July 2017.

The Oslo-based carrier began offering daily year-round service between Hamilton and Dublin in March.

NA said in a statement that anyone made redundant will be made a "last resort" and that the airline's decision is also being made with the approval of trade unions to ensure that the affect on staff is limited.

In its Irish heyday Norwegian operated United States routes from Shannon, Cork and Dublin, to destinations including TF Green airport in Providence and New York Stewart International.
