Israeli police clash with Palestinians at Eid al-Adha gathering in Jerusalem

Israeli soldiers are seen during searches in the West Bank for the terrorists who killed Dvir Sorek

The site - known as Temple Mount to Jews and as the Noble Sanctuary to Muslims - has often been a flashpoint for clashes.

The site is located in east Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed in a move never recognised by the global community. Thousands of Muslims had flocked to the site early Sunday for holiday prayers.

The holy site is controlled by the Jordanian Waqf, which issued a formal complaint to Israel. But it is also Tisha B'av, the day when Jews commemorate the destruction of the first and second Temples on the same site.

Israeli army tanks later targeted lookout posts that belong to Hamas' armed wing in response to the shooting attack, he added.

Similarly, Saudi Arabia called on the global community to "protect the Palestinian people from various Israeli aggressive practices".

Palestinian diplomat and member of the Palestine Liberation Organization Hanan Ashrawi said, "The storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli occupation forces this Eid morning is an act of recklessness and aggression".

Palestinian women confront Jewish worshippers as they enter the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem.

Jews can visit but not pray there to avoid provoking tensions. For both sides to be able to someday negotiate a way to navigate peace, the violence - especially at holy sites, must stop, and it is up to both sides to instigate this.

Two separate incidents have led to a total of 5 deaths at the Gaza border over the weekend.

The clashes come at a time of heightened tensions between Israel and Palestine, just days after an Israeli soldier was killed south of Jerusalem.

On Saturday, Israeli forces shot dead four Palestinians east of the city of Deir al-Balah along the Gaza fence.

Three Israeli soldiers were wounded and the Palestinian was killed, it said.

Hamas has staged weekly protests along the Israel-Gaza frontier since March 2018 against the strip's dire conditions following 12 years of Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

At least 302 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza or the border area since then, the majority during demonstrations and clashes.

Another Hamas leader, Salah Bardaweel, said on Tuesday that his group was not afraid of Israeli threats to assassinate Hamas figures and launch a military operation in the Gaza Strip.

A Hamas spokesman says four Palestinian militants who were killed crossing the Gaza perimeter fence were engaging in "an individual act", stressing that the operation was not planned by Hamas.
