Trump says China is sending troops to Hong Kong border

August 12 extradition protester eye protest

Protesters were in their fourth consecutive day of protests at the airport, aiming to bring global attention to a movement against police violence and unwanted Chinese influence over Hong Kong that has inflamed the city for 10 weeks.

Hong Kong airport authorities on Tuesday suspended all check-ins, but reversed a previous statement saying that all departing flights had been cancelled as pro-democracy protesters blocked the facility.

Meanwhile, there were long lines at departure gates at some airports in Japan on Tuesday as people awaited their Hong Kong-bound flights.

Earlier Tuesday, demonstrators shut down operations at Hong Kong's airport for the second straight day, flooding the main terminal. "All passengers are advised to leave the terminal buildings as soon as possible".

Air New Zealand had to cancel two flights because of the airport protests - its Monday night flight to Hong Kong from Auckland, and the return flight on Tuesday. Thousands of protesters are still in the airport.

Beijing has repeatedly voiced support Lam's administration and local police while denouncing protesters. The latest escalation follows a weekend of bloody clashes between the police and protesters.

Operations resumed on Tuesday morning but passengers still faced transport chaos, with hundreds of flights cancelled or delayed.

Nara resident Haruka Noguchi, 27, who was flying to Dubai via Hong Kong, told Kyodo News she did not know what the situation was at the airport in Hong Kong. In a protest on Sunday, one activist, a young woman, reportedly suffered a serious eye injury when police fired non-lethal rounds at protesters. Many Hongkongers feared the law would be used by authorities to target political enemies and that it would signify the end of the "one country, two systems" policy, eroding the civil rights enjoyed by Hong Kong residents since the handover of sovereignty from the United Kingdom to China in 1997.

She added that Hong Kong is part of China and urged the United States to stop interfering in China's worldwide affairs "at once". "Protesters have been frequently using extremely unsafe tools to attack the police in recent days, constituting serious crimes with sprouts of terrorism emerging", said Hong Kong and Macau Affairs office spokesman Yang Guang in Beijing. Hong Kong legal experts say Beijing might be paving the way to use anti-terrorism laws to try to quell the demonstrations.

"I don't mind what they [the protesters] do but they made us five hours delayed", said 50-year-old Wing Au-yeung, who had stopped off in Hong Kong to collect his aged mother before travelling to South Korea with his family.

"This wantonly tramples on Hong Kong's rule of law and social order", he said.

The weeks of protests began as opposition to a now-suspended bill that would have allowed suspects to be extradited to mainland China and have swelled into wider calls for democracy.

"In terms of withdrawing the bill, using this specific term, which the protesters have called for, do you as Hong Kong's leader have the autonomy to decide to withdraw the bill, yes or no, or is this something that Beijing has to approve as well?"
