Antonio Brown Asks Fans To Help Find His Helmet: Twitter Reacts

The football future of Oakland Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown is in doubt

Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown has not been happy about the NFL's new helmet rule and even threatened to retire if he couldn't wear the helmet he used during his first nine seasons in the league.

Earlier Tuesday, Brown put out a post on social media - with incentive, of course - asking fans for their help in finding a newer version of his old helmet - the Schutt Air Advantage. The problem was Brown's favorite helmet is more than 10 years old and therefore can not be certified as safe by the National Operating Committee for Standards and Athletic Equipment.

Then, a loophole was found that would allow it, but Brown would have to find a helmet that was under 10 years old to get it approved.

McCarthy didn't mention Brown by name when he tweeted: "The player can't practice or play in games with equipment that's not approved".

Brown has not been practicing recently because of injuries to his feet reportedly caused or worsened when he wore improper footwear during a cryotherapy treatment.

"Hopefully we're going to get this behind us soon", Rosenhaus said.

While this is all very silly as it's hard to believe that a helmet made in 2010 or 2011 is materially safer than one manufactured a year or two before that, this is a fascinating glimpse into how the sausage gets made. The AiR Advantage had lived out its useful life as a product and was discontinued when something better was developed.

"The AiR Advantage helmet was introduced for the 2002 season", the company said in a statement. Brady, who has worn a Riddell-VSR4 throughout his career, was one of 32 players whose helmets were banned. He was acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers in March and promptly given a three-year, $50.125 million contract.
