Samsung partners with Xiaomi to launch 108MP mobile image sensor

Samsung announces World's First 108MP Mobile Camera Sensor in collaboration with Xiaomi

ISOCELL Bright HMX is highlighted as a first in the industry and in the world.

The news was dropped this morning via an announcement from Samsung, while Twitter leaker Ice Universe has reported that Xiaomi gets dibs on its debut, while Samsung will roll it out afterwards in the S11. But the sensor size is increased to a 1/1.33-inch size that is touted to produce images with a resolution equivalent to that of a high-end DSLR. The HMX is also equipped with Smart-ISO, which intelligently selects the level of amplifier gains, resulting in noise reduction and clearer pictures, the company said. All the while in resolutions around 6K (6016 x 3384) and 30-frames-per-second. Xiaomi seems to be a believer in that solution, having had a hand in its development, so expect the next big Mi phone to boast such a camera on its back.

Chipmaker Qualcomm too had earlier upgraded the camera support to 192-megapixel on its new processors like Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon 730.

Samsung's new 108-megapixel camera sensor, the Isocell Bright HMX, is the first to go above 100 megapixels for a smartphone camera, the company claims. It's also created to take better low-light shots by merging the pixels to absorb more light. Meet the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX: the world's first 100MP+ smartphone image sensor. On the other hand, while it uses higher ISO for low light photography, the camera switches to a lower ISO in bright lit scenarios.

A Redmi-branded smartphone with a 64-megapixel camera will become official in Q4 2019, at least that's when it will arrive to India, so we're guessing that its general launch will take place in that timeframe.

The smartphone camera has quickly replaced the point-and-shoot camera of yesterday in just a matter of years.

The quality of images from Samsung's ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor remains to be seen. "We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones".
