Preview & Schedule: Nadal & Fognini Renew Their Rivalry In Montreal

Spaniard Rafael Nadal

World No.2, Rafael Nadal came from a set down to defeat Fabio Fognini 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 and book a place in the semifinals of the Montreal Open 2019.

The Spanish top seed, an 18-time Grand Slam champion, triumphed 6-3, 6-4 in windy conditions on day four of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour Masters 1000 event at the Canadian city's IGA Stadium.

The quarter-final comeback keeps the Spaniard's hopes of repeating his title from 2018 alive as he awaits the victor of the clash between Frenchman Gael Monfils and Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

Meanwhile, second seed Dominic Thiem will play Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals after beating Marin Cilic 7-6 (9-7) 6-4.

Nadal will play his first match after the one that losing to Roger Federer at Wimbledon on Wednesday when he plays the victor of Alex de Minaur's battle with British ace Dan Evans.

Coming off a victory on clay in Austria for his third title of the year, Thiem will face eighth-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russian Federation, a 6-3, 6-3 victor over Cristian Garin of Chile. Of course, I'm so confident coming here.

Nadal will meet either countryman and No. 10 seed Roberto Bautista Agut or No. 16 Gael Monfils of France in the semifinals.

Nadal earned revenge against Fognini after losing to the Italian in the Monte Carlos semi-finals in April.

"I'm having a good season more or less, being competitive nearly in every single event that I have been playing", he said. "I felt that I had a big chance to be 3-Love for me. then it was 3-1 for him". He also won the event here in 2005 - his first hardcourt victory - and in 2008 in Toronto. With that said, Nadal seems to be moving well on this surface and his return is on point.

Earlier on Friday, the eighth-seeded Medvedev needed just under 57 minutes to finish off Thiem, the No. 2 seed from Austria. He went on to defeat Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the championship match.

"I knew [Osaka's] game a little bit more, so that's a little easier", Williams said. "It saved me a lot of energy".

Khachanov beat Medvedev in Moscow last fall.

"I played a great game in the second [set] and he had a bad game in the second game".
