Jeffrey Epstein: Financier 'found dead in cell' in NY

Epstein documents released

Instead of facing federal sex-trafficking charges, he pleads guilty to two charges of soliciting prostitution, including with a minor.

"[He] was found unresponsive in his cell in the Special Housing Unit from an apparent suicide", a statement from the justice department said.

That plea deal was closely scrutinised in recent weeks and, last month, US Labor Secretary Alex Acosta resigned over his role in it.

In 2015, Ms Maxwell was sued by Virginia Giuffre, an alleged victim of Epstein who also alleged she was forced into a sexual encounter with Andrew when she was 17.

"I am angry Jeffrey Epstein won't have to face his survivors of his abuse in court", she said in a statement to NBC News.

The crimes are said to have been committed between 2002 and 2005, but was arrested in New Jersey on 6 July after landing on his private jet.

Epstein based much of his empire in the Virgin Islands, including Financial Trust Co., which he started in NY in 1981 as a money management firm called J. Epstein & Co. that he claimed catered only to billionaires.

The FBI and the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Justice will investigate his death.

After Epstein was arrested, Mr Trump told reporters he "knew (Epstein), like everybody in Palm Beach knew him", but added: "I had a falling out with him".

They claim that Epstein was "well aware that numerous victims were minors".

There have been a few big scandals this year but none of them might be as a big as Jeffrey Epstein's case.

He socialised with princes and presidents and lived on a 100-acre private island in the Caribbean and one of the biggest mansions in NY.

Photos published by the New York Post lend some credence to this report, as they show Epstein's body being wheeled into hospital on a gurney, clad in the standard-issue prison jumpsuit, instead of the paper dress or 'suicide smock' usually given to these inmates. That circle, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton and billionaire Leslie Wexner, all distanced themselves from the financier after his July 2019 arrest.

The legal papers also contain denials from other parties who have been caught up in the case, including Donald Trump, who was in a photograph with Epstein in the 1990s.

Epstein's death came a day after the unsealing of a court filing in which a woman who accused Epstein of keeping her as a sex slave said one of the financier's associates had instructed her to have sex with at least a half-dozen prominent men.

The files related to the separate civil case of Giuffre v Maxwell, in which Virginia Giuffre, claimed to have been the United States businessman's teenage "sex slave".

2007: A plea deal is struck with Alex Acosta, the U.S. attorney in Florida.

Neither Maxwell's lawyer nor a public-relations firm she hired responded Friday to emails from The Associated Press. "We can get you educated". However, if you or someone else is in danger or endangering others, call police immediately on 111.
