Apple Software Locks iPhone Batteries to Prevent Independent Repair

iFixit notes that this authentication feature doesn't actually affect battery performance, so if you swap out a battery using methods Apple doesn't approve of, the new battery will function normally. Unless Apple authenticates the replacement using software while doing it itself, even official Apple batteries are not recognised, and you lose the useful Battery Health software feature.

The problem this creates for iPhone owners is, they are faced with a choice between paying the Apple price for a battery replacement, or going elsewhere, saving some money, but losing access to their battery health information in iOS. The deeper access should make researchers' lives a lot easier, able to access deeper iOS functions without waiting for a jailbreak to be available for every update. According to their report, the software lock appears to have been introduced to iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max models running the latest iOS 12 version or the iOS 13 beta.

IFixit says this software effectively cripples third-party fix businesses, forcing customers to have their devices repaired or refurbished - often at a much higher cost - by Apple itself.

The only way to return this to normal is to get your battery replaced by one of Apple's chosen repairers. Whether the battery works perfectly or is on the verge of giving up, the phone will tell you at all times that you need to service it. If either check fails, navigating to the Settings Battery section in iOS will display the word "Service" next to Battery Health. This data is required to calculate whether a battery is ready to be exchanged for a new one. As and when the overall percentage drops into the 80% region, Apple will replace your battery for a small fee.

Apple told Axios that they've done this because they "want to make sure our customers always have confidence their products will be repaired safely and correctly, and in a way that supports recycling".

First of all, Apple's foldable device strategy will begin with the iPad, which according to UBS could get this upgrade and see daylight as soon as 2020.

Apple also extends the bounties to everyone, invited or not. It's meant to scare people back to an Apple Store.
