Kevin McCarthy Expresses Concern About ‘Dehumanizing’ Violent Video Games After Shootings

"We have to look at ourselves as a nation, there are many factors that go into these shootings, many factors".

Dan Patrick was on Fox earlier going off on violent video games after the El Paso shooting, saying, "How long are we going to ignore - at the federal level particularly - where they can do something about the video game industry".

In an interview with Fox News in the wake of the shootings, McCarthy said videogames that involve shooting "dehumanize individuals".

Former Vice President Joe Biden said that violent video games that teach children "that you can shoot somebody" are "not healthy".

President Donald Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy are citing video games as one of the reasons behind mass shootings in the US.

In his response to the weekend's mass shootings in OH and Texas, US President Donald Trump condemned "grisly video games", and the effect they have on "troubled youth".

Biden appeared on CNN on August 5 to talk about the shootings and was asked by host Anderson Cooper about video games.

"I have always felt that is a problem for future generations and others", McCarthy said.

Trump attacked the internet and blamed video games for the shooting: "The perils of the internet and social media can not be ignored, and they will not be ignored". Studies have shown before what it does to individuals. "In this manifesto that we believe is from the shooter, in this manifesto he talks about living out his 'super soldier fantasy on Call of Duty'". It's pointless playing the blame game after people have already lost their lives, that's not helping anyone, but every time there's a horrific tragedy like this, people are so occupied with pointing out what they think the problem is but never actually take any steps. She asked, "What are your thoughts on that, in terms of understanding that words matter, and that when we're talking to each other on social media or looking at video games where they're using videos of characters with these weapons, is there a conversation to be had about that, about the tone that this country is using?" This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace. "We've always had guns; we've always had evil ... Video games help players connect with family and friends, relieve stress, and have fun". The paper often refers to an essay written by the University of Southern California's Professor Henry Jenkins back in 2005.

"Researchers find that people serving time for violent crimes typically consume less media before committing their crimes, than the average person in the general population", Jenkins said according to the paper.

Despite evidence to the contrary, video games have often been singled out as a cause of violence in US society. "That's why you can have situations where you may have a person who plays violent games but doesn't engage in violent acts", he said in a statement.
