At least nine people have been killed and at least 16 are injured after a shooting in Dayton, Ohio on Sunday morning (local time), U.S. police have said.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said the shooter was wearing body armour and had additional high-capacity magazines.

Dayton Police tweeted that an active shooter situation began in the Oregon District at 1:00am (local time), but that officers nearby were able to "put an end to it quickly".

Dayton Police previously said via Twitter that were "investigating an active shooter incident" in the city's OR district and asked residents to avoid the area.

Assistant police chief Matt Carper named the gunman as Connor Betts, a 24-year-old white male from OH, and said his sister Megan Betts, 22, was among those killed.

The shooter is also deceased after being shot to death by responding officers, police stated during the conference. There is no remaining threat to the community, and the FBI has touched down to assist with the investigation.

In addition to mass shootings in Texas and OH, gun deaths were reported in other states, including Illinois, Virginia, Louisiana, Florida and Maryland. Police identified the others as Monica Brickhouse, 39; Nicholas Cumer, 25; Derrick Fudge, 57; Thomas McNichols, 25; Lois Oglesby, 27; Saeed Saleh, 38; Logan Turner, 30; and Beatrice N. Warren-Curtis, 36.

"She had told me she liked my outfit and thought I was cute, and I told her I liked her outfit and I thought she was cute", Papillon said. Police said relatives arrived and the suspect Mark Hughes then shot at an 11-year-old boy, who fled the scene and was later treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, and then Hughes fled himself.

Officers gunned down the OH shooter at the doorstep of a bar-turned-hiding place in the middle of Dayton's nightclub district, and arrested the El Paso shooter as hundreds fled a crowded shopping center.

A few hours later in Florida, Pinellas County Sheriff deputies shot and killed a 35-year-old man after police said he had pointed a 12-guage shotgun at them.

Nine people were killed in Ohio Sunday morning less than 24 hours after over a dozen were killed in a shooting incident in El Paso, Tex.

Police said twenty people were killed and 26 were wounded in the violence.

The killer has been shot dead and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are now at the scene. His tweets also mentioned the shooting in El Paso, which was allegedly committed by a racist opponent of Latinx immigration and which took place less than 24 hours before the mass shooting in Dayton.

The shooting occurred in the Oregon District of Dayton outside a popular establishment known as the Ned Peppers bar, according to CNN.

A week ago, another gunman killed three people and wounded 13 others at a public celebration in Gilroy, California. He said the Ohio State Highway Patrol has offered assistance to local law enforcement as they investigate what happened.

"I have ordered that flags in OH remain at half mast in honor and memory of the victims who lost their lives this morning", DeWine said on Twitter.

Gov. Mike DeWine issued his own statement before 7 a.m., announcing that he's ordered flags in OH remain at half-mast and offered assistance to Whaley. "We will share updates as we have more information".

"Time and again, I as mayor have been amazed by Dayton first responders".

"This is a day that we all dread happening and certainly what's very sad is that I've gotten messages from cities across the country is that so many of us have gone through it", Whaley said at a press conference on Sunday morning.

On Twitter, singer Lizzo called on people not to "normalise" shootings, saying that her family in Dayton were safe "but that's not the case for nine other families".

Whaley said the Oregon District has reopened, and a vigil is planned Sunday evening. Much has already be learned in El Paso.
