Apple set to release 3 5G phones next year

Apple should go private to save your pocketbook

This is made possible due to the fact that Apple has recently acquired Intel's smartphone modem chip division, which will be utilized to developed 5G modems in its upcoming smartphone.

Notably, Apple's two top-tier iPhone models in 2020 will reportedly feature 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch displays.

First there were rumors of Apple not having a 5G-capable handset until 2021, but then just 10 days later, there were whispers of a 5G iPhone arriving in 2020 after all, with the latter becoming possible thanks to Apple finally settling its dispute with chipmaker Qualcomm.

Revenue from iPhones during that period totaled $26 billion, a 12% decrease from the same time past year. Now, according to a new report obtained by MacRumors, Kuo expects all three phones will support 5G. Apple now uses 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.5-inch displays on its iPhone lineup but next year the company will reportedly switch things up with 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch displays for its most premium devices.

In his latest research note, shared by 9to5Mac, Kuo claims that at least two of the new 2020 iPhone models will include time-of-flight sensors at the rear.

Current iPhone flagship models, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and the iPhone X use a multi-camera system to sense depth. At the moment, there are only a handful of markets offering only limited 5G coverage, but the new networks will become more and more widespread as 2020 unfolds.

Apple needs to convince consumers to part with their cash in an environment where Android brands will be pitching 5G phones for between $250 and $350 in a market that doesn't appreciate the nuances of the new mobile tech.

The $1B deal allowed Apple to absorb 2,200 Intel employees, and also gave it access to Intel's intellectual property related to its 5G modem, equipment and leases.

Neither Apple nor Kuo, through his firm TF International Securities, responded immediately to a request for comment.

According to an investor's note from Ming-Chi Kuo, the firm is likely to add 5G to its 2020 iPhones.
