Max Holloway retained his UFC title fight by defeating MMA legend Frankie Edgar in the main event of UFC 240 at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.
He moved nearly constantly, darting in and out, and catching Holloway with the occasional 1-2.
Despite a failed one-off at lightweight in April, Max Holloway's visit to Edmonton on Saturday reconfirmed his standing as the best 145-pound fighter in the world.
But despite losing his fourth straight title shot, Edgar said after the bout that he has "a lot of fight left in me". Everybody said I wasn't going to be able to stay with his pace. I wanted to prove a point and go five rounds with him to let the world know that I'm here to stay and the "Blessed Express" is still on the move. The champion initially appeared to take a cautious approach to his first bout since having his 13-fight win streak ended by Dustin Poirier, who he jumped up to lightweight to face for the interim title.
Marc-Andre Barriault (11-3) lost a split decision to Poland's Krzysztof Jotko in a middleweight bout, and Olivier Aubin-Mercier (12-5) lost a unanimous-decision to 22-year-old Arman Tsarukyan of Armenia in a lightweight fight.
Tucker, 33, won by submission over South Korean striker Seungwoo Choi, 26, with a rear naked choke midway through the third round of their featherweight fight.
Overall, the champion's command of distance was masterful as he routinely made the smaller Edgar pay for advancing forward by timing with with power shots, including a reliable right uppercut, and bloodied Edgar's nose midway through.
The challenger was game right up until the final horn, but never came close to putting Holloway in trouble.
The UFC matchmakers have tried to match Holloway and Edgar three times.
But he didn't have an answer for Holloway's length nor did he have the firepower to shake him. I am who I am as a father and martial artist because of some of the things I've learned from Frankie and coach Mark Henry. Max is a stud, man. He represents our sport to the best. He represents his team to the best.
Holloway proved that conclusively again.
Regardless, both Holloway and Penn are now having, and have had, legendary careers. It's Holloway's third successful title defense. Edgar, 37, is 0-3 in featherweight title fights, with the previous two losses coming against Jose Aldo.
Meanwhile, a crestfallen Edgar paid tribute to the champion, saying: "I expected everything he brought".
