Gunfire Breaks Out at a Block Party in Brooklyn

One dead as about a dozen people are shot at Brooklyn block party

"I thought I was going to get shot".

The incident took place near Christopher Avenue and Hageman Avenue in Brownsville area.

One 38-year-old man who was shot in the head was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, AP reported. The condition of the other victims is not yet known.

Top police officials and Mayor Bill de Blasio asked Brownsville residents at a press conference on Sunday for any video or photos that may help the NYPD identity what is believed to be "no less than two shooters".

At around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a New York City police spokesman said 11 people had been shot, but that he couldn't confirm their conditions. "And then when you start seeing the crowd running and screaming, then that's when everything clicked on that, you know, that this is gunfire, so the first thing you're looking for is cover", Michael Thomas, a community activist, told CBS New York. It said the event has grown over the years to include concerts and other things.

"One of the worst experiences of my life", the council member for the 41st District tweeted. An annual Old Timers event was being held outside the recreation center. "How does such a lovely and peaceful event become overshadowed by tragedy in seconds?" Police were trying to move people away from the area. The name of the 38-year-old man who was killed has not been released, pending notification of relatives.

"We will do everything in our power to keep this community safe and get guns off our streets", de Blasio tweeted.

While New York crime rates have seen a decline, the neighborhood of Brownsville has continued to struggle with gun violence.

"State Sen. Roxanne J. Persaud added the hashtags "#StopTheViolence" and "#PutDownTheGuns" to her tweets expressing frustration with the shooting, which she called "unacceptable" and "cowardly". "We are saddened by this senseless act of violence, and offer our deepest condolences and concern to the family of the deceased and for those injured".
