Grasshopper swarms have Las Vegas feeling antsy

Swarms of grasshoppers invade Las Vegas Grasshoppers relax on a sidewalk outside the Las Vegas Sun offices in Henderson Nevada

Grasshoppers swarm a sidewalk a few blocks off the Strip on 26 July 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nevada state entomologist Jeff Knight said the number of adult pallid-winged grasshoppers traveling north to central Nevada is unusual but not unprecedented.

A migration of mild-mannered grasshoppers had residents and tourists of Las Vegas in panic as massive swarms of the insects plagued the city's streets, and are expected to keep doing so for the next two weeks before they migrate onward.

"It was insane", one tourist, Diana Rodriquez, told the TV station KLAS.

The clouds of buzzing insects, whose migration through the Las Vegas Valley scientists say is the result of a wetter-than-normal winter, were big enough that the National Weather Service detected them on its radar.

"They're moving through", he said.

"We have records clear from the '60s of it happening, and I have seen it ... at least four or five times in my 30-plus years", he told CNN.

"When I see them, it's like being in a movie".

Though they have unsettled locals and may even seem like divine punishment, the grasshoppers are in fact the result of unique weather conditions.

And for the unfortunate scenario of one of the bugs getting into your vehicle wile you're driving, Knight says you should remain calm.

But Knight says there's no need to fear these grasshoppers because they're harmless to humans.

The flying insects have thronged the city's major landmarks along the Strip, with footage of them attracted to the bright lights of the Egyptian-themed Luxor hotel and casino surfacing last week. Officials said people who want to keep them away can change their outdoor lighting to a low ultraviolet or amber light. Knight explained that the grasshoppers do not pose a threat as they do not carry infection or bite.

"It was insane. We didn't even want to walk through there".
