Samsung tweaks Galaxy Fold, will re-release in September

The Samsung Galaxy Fold was due for an April launch but broken screens have delayed it for months

After many months of uncertainty, Samsung has finally made a decision to issue a still vague, but not as vague as before timeline for the release of the Galaxy Fold: September. We've been over this - when Samsung introduces a new class of device, it pretty much ends up being the physical embodiment of a "first!"

While it's clear why Samsung delayed their foldable phone, we still don't know why Huawei chose to delay the Mate X. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X screen is on the outside of the fold. The Galaxy Fold is also likely to arrive in September and the face-off between the two devices will be something interesting to see. "We improved the phone in many aspects, protecting it from external debris while maintaining the foldable function", a Samsung spokesman said.

The screen's protective layer, which induced consternation and controversy when some reviewers removed it, now has a bigger footprint that extends beyond the bezels.

"Consumer confidence in Galaxy Fold has significantly deteriorated".

Samsung has added protection caps on the top and bottom hinge of the Galaxy Fold.

The space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced. Samsung said it has been working on the software as well with optimizations for more apps and services.

As a result of all of this work, Samsung says the Galaxy Fold is ready for use, and is eyeing September for release... just not in Australia.

The Galaxy A80 is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 730 processor and its sports the company's new 6.7-inch FHD Super AMOLED "Infinity Display". It is powered by a 7nm processor paired with 12GB of RAM.

The foldable phone, which will retail for $1,980, was supposed to hit stores in April but those plans were shelved after the reports from early users about how quickly the device broke. This additional camera is a TOF sensor, as confirmed by Huawei's website.

The phone has a 4,400mAh battery that charges via USB Type-C and will support 55W SuperCharge. Right now, all the company has committed to is the month of September. There is no word on whether there will be design changes on the Mate X like the Galaxy Fold.
