Missing teens now suspects in deaths of tourist couple in Canada

Lucas Fowler left and Chynna Deese

Mounties have confirmed Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod are wanted for questioning following the murders of Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese in northern B.C. last week, as well as an unidentified man found dead close to Dease Lake on Friday near a burned out camper owned by the suspects.

Mychelle Keeper said McLeod paid for $20 of fuel and Schmegelsky asked if they could consume alcohol in the community, which is dry.

"They were happy and they were smiling", Curtis said.

"We were overjoyed for Lucas", he said. The following day, Fowler and his girlfriend, Chynna Noelle.

Cops now do not have any suspects and said the alleged murders could have been a "crime of opportunity". It was not immediately clear to police whether the body was connected to the auto and the missing teenagers, but the RCMP said they are now also considering McLeod and Schmegelsky as suspects in the man's murder.

The RCMP are seeking the public's help to find the suspects, but warn they could be armed and should not be approached.

It is about 300 miles along remote roads from the spot where 24-year-old American Chynna Deese and 23-year-old Australian Lucas Fowler were found shot dead over a week ago.

RCMP have released a composite sketch of a person of interest in the killings of Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese on the Alaska Highway last week.

At the same time, investigators are working to confirm the identity of a man who was found dead some two kilometres from the truck.

The RCMP believe McLeod and Schmegelsky are no longer in British Columbia and maybe in Saskatchewan.

Police would also not speak to what had changed in the investigation that led investigators to decide the pair were now suspects.

"We would like to stress the importance of heightened vigilance and awareness for anybody travelling in and around the area". It also suggests all forms of identification were taken, he said.

"It's unusual to have two major investigations undergoing of this nature in northern B.C.at the same time and so we recognize that there's a possibility that these could be linked", Shoihet said.

The man in the sketch might have been driving south in an old "Jeep Cherokee with a black stripe on the hood and a black light/bull bar with small, covered lights", according to the news release.

Mr Broughton, a mechanic, said he spoke to Mr Fowler, but the 23-year-old seemed to know how to fix the van.

The RCMP believe their murder occurred between 4 p.m. PDT (2300 GMT) on July 14 and 7 a.m. (1400 GMT) on July 15.

About 470 kilometres away from this first crime scene, was found a burnt-out truck in the town of Dease Lake, BC.

They described him as being Caucasian and aged 50 to 60 years old.

Photos of the pair, which RCMP say were captured in northern Saskatchewan, were shared with media and the public on Tuesday. "Definitely surprised. That's not the outcome we were expecting or hoping for for sure, so our focus goes now to how can we support the families of the victim and of the boys?"
